Project file names - what are they?

Post by cv27 » Mon Mar 11, 2013 8:32 pm

I've noticed an accumulation of files for any given project:
  • [project name].pad - that's obvious
    [project name].pad7 - some XML ?
    [project name].pad20[yymmdd] - backups ?
Not that the other than .pad files are big, but they do accumulate and apparently don't go away.

Except for the .pad, what are they and when/can we delete them?

.pad - this is the main project file, which contains all the commands and logic. It does not contain all the images / sounds etc, they are all stored in the project _Files folder in the same directory as the .pad file. The .pad file, and the _Files folder are what make up your project. Zip these up & keep backups regularly.

.pad.bak - you might see this file while you are working on a project - it is just a temporary backup. If the software crashes for any reason, you might be prompted to recover with this backup file, which is automatically saved every 5 minutes while you have a project open.

.pd7 - this is the same information as the .pad file, just stored in a different format (similar to xml). It is created every time you save your project. For backup purposes only. We are able to recover a .pad file from this file if you ever need to.

.pad[yyyymmdd] - every day that you open a project, if this daily backup file does not exist for that day, then the .pad file is copied & given this name before it is opened in the software. For backup purposes only. You can rename a .pad[yyyymmdd] file to be a .pad file & open it, thereby reverting your project to how it was at the beginning of that day. Rename this file at your own risk, only after making a backup of your existing .pad file.

You can remove any of the daily backup files if you want (at your own risk!) - but the others are created automatically.
